A Little bit of Larceny or a Lot
My friend was telling me about her niece’s blog. It seems that the young woman has been able to parlay her writing skills into a very interesting blog that is quite popular and successful in the blogging world. My friend was irate because her niece wrote about things that she described as her true experiences, and my friend said these were definitely not true, but made up. So I told her that I don’t believe anyone notices the difference between true and false anymore. This has got to be the era of either a little bit or a lot of larceny. In the lot of larceny department, I can name four books published within the last couple of years that were exposed as false memoirs, or partially false at least. The most recent was by Margaret (Peggy) Seltzer of Eugene, Ore., whoes book “Love and Consequences,“ a memoir published last week by Riverhead, was recently exposed as a hoax. “A Million Little Pieces,“ James Frey's memoir of addiction, was only partly true. “Honor Lost: Love and Death in Modern-Day Jordan“ By Norma Khouri has been exposed as a hoax and “Misha: A Memoir of the Holocaust Years“ By Misha Defonseca was also a hoax. All of these books had sad and tragic underdog stories that were guaranteed to be best sellers. I have not read any of them, so I don’t know how good the prose is or whether or not they would be good as novels. But obviously the publishers didn’t think it necessary to check out the story or the writers. The Internet is a terrific place where truth and fiction intermingle. Lots of people are really confused about what is original and what isn’t, and readers readily accept whatever is written as total fact. If an article is already written about a subject someone wants to write about, it is so easy to lift and paste whole paragraphs without attribution and call it yours. No one would ever notice a moderate amount of larceny in that case and it isn’t really stealing because you wanted to write about that subject, too. At Qasia original Intel is supposed to be original material written for Qasia and not published previously. Yet writers feel free to submit articles from other web sites as their original writing. Of course, original Intel has a premium value, so who cares if its not exactly original? It’s hilarious and acceptable to one and all unless someone takes the trouble to check it out. And then there are the very little acts of larceny that ordinary folks indulge in. For example, you add the check up and there is an error in your favor, do you point it out and pay the correct amount? The cashier gives you a little more change than you ought to be getting, do you give it back? By mistake you find you’ve been given the higher priced item but paid for the lower priced one, do you say anything about it? There is always comfort in the knowledge that everyone else is doing it? Isn’t there?
