Almond Cookies

1 stick butter
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoons almond extract
2 heaping cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup chopped raw almonds

Combine all ingredients into a stiff dough. Turn out on a floured board and divide into two portions. Make two long rolls out of these and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes. The cookies will be baked and still soft so it is now possible to cut them into slices. Arrange the cut slices on the cookie sheet so that the sliced surface is facing up and return them to the oven to continue baking at 300F for ten more minutes. They should now be golden brown. If they are still very pale continue baking for a few more minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool. They should be done. These cookies are great with tea or coffee. They keep very well but I have never been able to have them around for very long as they get eaten fast.
