Blue Botanical Flower No.55
My Broken Back was responsible for my change from being an artist interested mainly in making large abstract paintings in a large studio to one who had to make small drawings in a small very limited space. I decided to think about flowers because it was a Chicago winter and miserable to experience. Cold and nasty every day of the week. So, flowers were my antidote to the gloom. I began to draw what I imagined to be orchids. Orchids in groups and orchids flying around in the space of the page. Blue orchids and golden orchids and orchids of every size and shape that I could imagine. Imagine it had to be because Chicago is not a place where one will find many orchids growing. My plan was to draw and paint these flowers until I had exactly 100 paintings. I don't know what was magic about that figure, but 100 it was. In addition to the paintings, I have been using the images on cards and products available from on line galleries. This month I am celebrating the arrival of Blue Botanical Flower No. 55 by making it into a Mother's Day Card. I have 45 more drawings to make and the subject has changed to include more kinds of flowers. I have yet to find out where this will go. Of one thing I am certain. The flowers helped the time go by but the winter continued to be awful. Drawing flowers from my imagination also made me be more observant of actual flowers in nature. My appreciation of flowering plants and their beauty has grown enormously.
