Edward Hopper American Icon Edward Hopper is an American icon. He is one of the most widely acclaimed American artist in the world. His work is often reproduced and has been an inspiration for photographers and cinematographers alike. He is frequently referred to as a realist painter who is interested in depicting loneliness and isolation. The current Art Institute of Chicago exhibition of his work is a totally comprehensive review of his watercolors, paintings and etchings. Despite what is often written about his work by art writers, I do not think he is a realist painter. His work appears to be narrative, but it isn’t. He is organizing components of his compositions into an abstraction of light and dark using buildings and isolated people as though they were objects in the compositional space and not real at all. It is an extension of the idea of still life using life.
