Edward Hopper Defies Convention After looking at more than 40 paintings by Edward Hopper it struck me that he defies the conventional wisdom of composition that divides the canvas into a ratio of one forth to three fourths divisions as in the “Golden Mean.” This is a term indicating a perfectly beautiful ratio used in design and architecture since the earliest civilizations. Edward Hopper‘s compositions usually divide the canvas in half and the main object is in the center.
