Fine Art or Art Products, Which is Which?

The Internet has made me change my views about art and art products. I have to admit, the profit motive has also been a part of this change in my thinking. But there are other considerations, too.

For most of my career I had never thought of using my images for art products. I have needed post cards for exhibit announcements and I have printed my own Christmas cards using reproductions of my paintings. That’s it.

When I make a drawing I don’t think of myself as a producer of a commercial product. I am not a graphic designer so I am not in the habit of designing products for sale. My intent is to express and solve an inner artistic problem visually. My hope is that I will sell the drawing or painting through an art gallery or from my own studio. I’m pretty sure most of the artists I know are not consciously thinking of creating items for sale as they create their art, yet, of course, that is exactly what we are all doing.

Most artists want to have their art exhibited and move on to be in some other person’s life. Often, if the artist sells something, they have not been directly involved in the sale of the work. Art dealers and consultants are the in the middle of this process.

Now artists are taking matters into their own hands and taking charge of selling their work on the Internet. The resources on the Internet have made it possible to directly sell art objects and cards on sites such as Zazzle and Greeting Card Universe. as well as other venues. This has been a new experience and makes me review my ideas about what is art?

So, what differentiates between so called low art and high art objects? Is it the value the market places on the work as it enters the arena of commerce? Is it the value the artist places on the work? Is it the acceptance of an art viewing public? Is it representation in an art gallery? Is it represented by the total number of objects sold that use the artist’s images?

I only know that when someone I don’t know buys one of my products, or when someone on an art commerce site makes a nice comment about my images, the difference no longer exists for me.
