Hungarian Appetizer Spread
This is a very rich cream cheese spread that was a popular appetizer in my home when I was growing up. It is too rich, probably for today’s more austere and low calorie food choices, but a little of it goes a long way. 8 ounces of softened cream cheese 1 stick of softened butter (4 ounces) 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika ½ teaspoon of caraway seeds 1 teaspoon of capers 1 tablespoon of finely chopped sweet onion 1 teaspoon of chives optional ingredients: anchovies mashed into the mixture and ½ teaspoon prepared mustard. This is traditionally spread on dark rye bread and served as an appetizer before a meal. It goes well with wine and beer. |
