Internet Friendships

My first Internet friendships began in l997on a site that was then geocities.com. It became Yahoo.com and still exists as Yahoo’s web hosting adjunct, but previously it was a web building and networking site only. I learned about it from a story in the local newspaper. It was divided into neighborhoods and there were individuals who became “leaders” that monitored site content and offered advice on web site design. I became one of these characters, although I knew little about the subject at the time. I imagine others who joined up were also fairly new to the project. It was through this site that I learned about html and web design, mostly by trial and error. I also learned that it is easy recognize countless new acquaintances by their screen names alone.

Two of the friends I met on line at that time were both web designers and together the three of us took out a geocities site and collaborated on it. It was pretty much like a patchwork quilt, but lots of fun to do. That was way before the current Internet social and business networking sites and it was a pretty small world compared to now.

One of the friends lived in California and the other in Denmark. It was then that I realized that the Internet does away with any sense of distance. The geographic location of a “friend” is irrelevant. Because of the encouragement of these two gentlemen, I began my own small web design business for other artists and arts organizations. They taught me the basics of getting domain names and servers to host my sites. The fact that we were friends at the time was strange to me, but I accepted it.

After about a year of this friendship it dissipated and I don’t have any idea what became of them afterwards. It did, however, introduce me to the powerful feelings of friendship that can happen between strangers when they interact on the Internet. It might simply be name recognition, such as that which occurs on Asia when I read articles submitted by the same person. I get to expect a particular kind of article and am not surprised very much. The original articles allow for the possibility of reading something a little unexpected and I appreciate that. There is name recognition on forums and on the Zazzle site where others write comments about products on a contributor’s wall.

I mention this because I just learned about the death of an Internet friend, Amy Jordan, that I knew only as foldartblonde on the Zazzle web site. I knew her because she was someone who took the time to make generous and kind comments on other people’s products, and frequently contributed to the Zazzle forum. I enjoyed her artwork and felt that she was a person that I’d want to know in person. I was very saddened to learn that she died this earlier this month. Her name was Amy Jordan. I recommend that anyone who wants to see the work of a true folk artist should visit her web site folk art blonde where you will see some beautiful natural art.

Contributor's Note

This small essay is simply my way of expressing my sadness at the loss of a kind person that I didn't actually know but who exemplifies the generosity of spirit that it is possible to discover on line.
