My No More Broken Back

I had spent the last 15 years suffering from back pain. The pain began in my side and leg and for a number of years I worried that it was my hip. I suffered without complaint because I believed it was simply a problem of getting old and I would have to live with it.

The pain was alleviated for the most part with various forms of prescribed anti-inflamatory medications, pain relievers, and a great deal of physical therapy. None of these remedies really worked but I continued to hope for something that would help. And, I was vehement about not wanting to have surgery.

In the meantime, I increased the dossages of these medications until one day I almost bled to death because of the effects of the anti-inflamatory medicines on my intestinal tract. Afterwards, when I no longer could take medication to help with the pain, and when the physical therapy did not seem to do anything for me, and when I could no longer walk very well, I decided to see a neurosurgeon in order to find out what was the problem.

After a having an MRI I learned that I had spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis and that my vertebrae was fractured and in a very dangerous position with reference to my spinal cord. Emergency surgery was the necessary solution with a follow-up of six moonths in a body cast plus a great deal more physical therapy. It was definitely not fun!

That was two years ago. I am now perfect. Yes, I have no pain at all. My physical condition is 100% improved. I can walk for several miles and I can work out at a fitness center. All of my previous activities are much improved.

I am writing this story because I just read an article in the Wall Street Journal for February 21, 2008 about the Afirmed Benefits of Spine Surgery for spinal stenosis and for degenerative spondylolisthesis. The article was about the results from the Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial that confirmed the success and benefit of spine surgery. I knew it from my own experience, but it was very satisfying to read about.

Contributor's Note

I wrote this to encourage other back pain sufferer to be more open minded about possible solutions to their problem.
