Painting the Statue of Liberty

Kay Smith Artist, Painter of the American Scene began her monumental series of paintings when she was selected by the New York Statue of Liberty Celebration Foundation as official artist aboard the “Liberty Cruise Ship” centennial vessel of the Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey, to capture the rededication celebration in New York Harbor July 3-4, 1976. The statue had undergone a renovation and she had also been commissioned to portray the renovated Statue of Liberty for the Hall of Fame Press for a new edition of their Hall of Fame book.

The relighting ceremony was the subject of Kay Smith’s first painting of this subject and the beginning of her project that is now completed, of painting scenes from American history. Her plan was to turn Lady Liberty a little to the south, giving us a profile shot of the Statue, to include the city of Manhattan in the painting---a composition she had not previously used. Sadly, the World Trade Center that was a focal point of the painting is only now a terrible memory. But the joy that she felt on that day is certainly evident in the painting.

The Dedication Cruise kicked off the weekend’s festivities on the evening of July 3, with the relighting of the torch by President Ronald Reagan and a brilliant display of lights, fireworks and harbor activities. This historical event was her fourth time painting aboard a seafaring vessel. She sketched “Tall Ships” off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island, during the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations from a 30 foot sailboat and she painted the Chicago skyline from the “Star of Chicago” a sight seeing cruise ship moored on Lake Michigan at Navy Pier. She sat in a small tugboat, fighting the current of the St Lawrence River, to capture the site of The Citadel, an historic fort near Quebec City.

When Kay painted the “Parade of Tall Ships” in the harbor on the 4th, as part of the Tall Ships Cruise offered by “Liberty Cruise ship.” she viewed the most spectacular fireworks ever displayed in the United States at that time.

Kay Smith is considered by many to be the “foremost living painter of American Landmarks, historical sites, and noteworthy events.” At present she has completed more than 350 paintings of Americas historic sites, of these 200 are included in her “American Legacy Collection” that spans
500 years of our nation’s history. She traveled to each of the places she painted where she set up her watercolor easel at each site in order to capture the true spirit and feeling of the event that took place in American History.

Her paintings are of actual buildings or monuments that commemorate historic events and she has used her imagination to paint her idea of certain events that do not have any physical presence other than the knowledge that they took place.

By the year 2036 the American Legacy Collection may be our children’s children’s children’s most memorable window on their heritage, she believes.

Her paintings are divided into periods in American History from Columbus’ to the present day.
