Plagiarism

My daughter had just begun teaching dance at a university when she found the need to ask students to write one paper. That is all that was required in addition to the dance program. The paper was to be a review of a particular dance centered movie. It was not a difficult assignment.

When all the papers were turned in she was amazed at the quality of work the students had achieved. Each paper was more impressive than the last. It finally occurred to her when she read two papers that were identical that there was something seriously wrong going on.

It was then that she learned about the epidemic of plagiarism that is going on all over the United States and probably elsewhere. She only needed to Google a few sentences to find the source of the plagiarized papers. Since then she has learned to be more wary of her students writing talents and she has learned about the various web sites set up to combat plagiarism such as www.plagiarism.org. and Turnitin. These organizations are a direct response to the problem.

According to plagiarism.org “All of the following are considered plagiarism:

* turning in someone Else's work as your own
* copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
* failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
* giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
* changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
* copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on "fair use" rules)“

Contributor's Note

Plagiarism is not the same as the False Memoir epidemic that the publishing industry has been having a problem with. But both involve lying to some degree.
