Playing with paper dolls.
My seven year old granddaughter is my weekly visitor after she finishes a day of 1st grade. She has had enough of schooling for the day and she enjoys coming to my house because I spend the entire visit having fun with her. We bake, Pamela's Chocolate Chip Banana Bread and I watch her engage in some computer activities. I'm not too crazy about this activity, but being a modern child, she is. When the weather permits, we go to the playground or to local parks. I try to think of original craft projects that we can do together. We have played with old fashioned paper dolls and made new paper clothing for them. We knit and crochet and cut and paste. Recently we began to make paper clothing for paper dolls that were photographs of her in different poses. She loves to pose and this was a good way to use her dramatic flare. I may have invented this activity, but perhaps others have thought of it, too. This is what I did. I made digital photographs of her in different poses suitable for a paper doll. I then printed them on large photo paper. Cut the photo out and traced the outline on plain white paper. From then on she was able to design many different outfits that would fit this personal paper doll. After we had a large selection of clothing, and each of us had a doll, it was a good opportunity to engage her in inventive and creative play. This led to our being able to write a script for a drama that the dolls could act in, and from then on we had quite a lot of material for an interesting afternoon activity that was very different from school. Later, we asked family members to design clothing for the dolls. Everyone participated, including her dad and her 18 year old brother. His outfits were great and so were her dads. One of them made a baseball dress and the other a jazz dress. |

A great gift idea, too. Have children pose for you and don't tell them what it's for. Then make them a paperdoll kit for a birthday or Christmas gift.
What a refreshing story, Julie. It's great to see a grendparent doing something with a child, that doesn't include electronics. I'm affraid that our future children will be electronic nerds, that can't complete a sentence, spell, read, or be responsible for their actions. Interaction is so important. Best wishes. Frederick
