Power and Responsibility
Lawyers and judges are very aware of the power and responsibility of following the rules of law in order to make a determination on the interpretation of the law in a particular case. School teachers and admissions faculty also have responsibility by having to make a judgement on whether or not a student gets a good grade or is admitted to a particular school or department. Employers, too, have to decide on whether or not to hire someone. Students who are applying to art and performing arts schools are being auditioned and juried and the decision as to whether or not they pursue a career in the arts is up in the air until they receive an acceptance or rejection letter. Other students hoping to get into college are just as anxious as the pool of candidates for each class becomes larger and larger each year. Everyone who has the responsibility of judging people ought to take it very seriously and make every effort to give each candidate a fair hearing. No matter what, however, there are standards to be met and a grading curve will occur naturally. School teachers know that there is a grading curve and there will always be a percentage at the top representing the best or highest grade, and the bottom. Some students receive an A and others don’t. The situation of screening for excellence is totally different on the web. On websites where the members screen each other I wonder what the curve is. One of the sites I have encountered that discusses this issue with regard to writing is Trust Building Online: Rating and Reputation Systems This site talks about the issue of trust in regard to writers submitting articles to be reviewed. On some sites where articles get grades it seems that most articles get C and no one gets an A. So the B is the new A and the C is the new B. There is no particular standard and the grade does not matter. Quantity is the rule. It is all words, words, words, as Henry Higgins would say in “My Fair Lady.“ On sites where there is a number system, everyone seems to be 6.5. Originality is equal to anything else just as long as words are produced. It can make for some fascinating reading as well as for some very boring reading. But one thing important is very true. Anyone who reads a lot of articles on the Internet will certainly end up knowing a lot of bits and pieces of odd information. One never knows when it will come in handy.
