The Point, a Chicago Park
Promontory Point Park in Chicago is known as "The Point" and has been called this ever since it was created in the 1920's. The Landscaping is by Alfred Caldwell who developed it in the Prairie School tradition. This park was created by landfill at the shores of Lake Michigan where a peninsula was created. The lake shore at that location was filled in and a high meadow was built up as a grassy area around a field house. This created a beautiful landscape that became the Eastern boundary of Hyde Park and it is a part of Chicago's Burnham Park. In order to reach the park an underpass was built below Lake Shore Drive. The field house, built of Wisconsin Lannon Stone was started in 1936 and was finished the following year. The beautiful "Point" has been in use all of these years providing access to Lake Michigan and, on a clear day, offering panoramic views of Chicago's shoreline from the downtown "Loop" to Indiana. It is a unique park where there is the quiet beauty of a peaceful place in a big urban environment. Here one can walk along the lake, bike, sunbathe, or sit on the rocks and admire the breathtaking views. The seawall around the "Point" was built out of limestone and has lasted all these years. Unfortunately, there is a need to reconstruct the seawall and current plans call for encasing it in modern materials, steel and concrete. There is disagreement in the community about the feasibility of this plan. While the argument continues, the "point" remains accessible to one and all exactly as it was when it was completed in 1936.
