Watercolor

There are a number of methods of creating a painting. Watercolor painting is often the media of choice for many amateur painters because it seems to be easy to use. It is a good media because it is solvent free and can be set up in most home environments. Unfortunately, it is somewhat difficult to manipulate and it takes a while to get the hang of working with it. It is fun to paint with watercolor and it is worth trying.

Watercolor is formed from a mixture of pigments and binder that is soluble in water. It can be in color blocks or in tubes or in small glass containers. When artists paint using watercolor the painting is very brilliant in color because the watercolor paint is transparent and the white paper shines through the paint. The transparency is its beauty.

Watercolor paper is heavy and often comes in bound tablets. The reason for this is that when the paper is wet, it will buckle. But since the tablet edge is pasted down, when the paper dries the painting is automatically stretched and flattened. If watercolor paper is purchased that is loose, if it isn’t heavy enough to prevent buckling it will have to be taped down to a board while the painting is being worked on. When the painting is dry it can be removed from the taped board.

Artists use special soft watercolor brushes to manipulate the paint. Fine brushes are expensive but are worth it because they achieve the best result. The brushes come in various sizes and are made of acrylic fiber or sable hair.

When a wash of water color dries it leaves a crisp and distinct edge. Often the edge is watered down by the painter so that the color fades into the surrounding areas.

A problem novice watercolor painters usually run into is that once the color is down, it is hard to change what has been painted. Over painting will result in a brown area that may not be what the artist had intended. Watercolor is a method that achieves a very fresh looking painting and works very well for still life and landscape painting.

When shopping for art supplies it is a good idea to purchase watercolor paint and paper from a good art supply store where there is advice available about the various brands of paint and paper.

Thick watercolor mixed with gum is known as “gouache.” It makes an opaque paint and has a totally different look on the paper than traditional watercolor paint.

Watercolor pencils and crayons are also available and can be used with traditional watercolor paint. I usually use a combination of watercolor paint and pencils to achieve the effects I am interested in.
