What is the Art of Flamenco?
What is Traditional Flamenco Music and Dance? Flamenco music and dance comes from the Southern part of Spain called Andalusia. It has its roots in the medieval music of Spain with strong Moorish, Gypsy and Jewish influences. It developed out of the cries and sufferings of a persecuted people when, after the Spanish Inquisition the Moors, Gypsies and Jews were all banned from Spain. Many styles of cante flamenco--flamenco songs--are seldom heard outside the Spanish home with the exception of summer festivals in Andalusia. This traditional festival has been the only way to help preserve, maintain and to pass down to future generations this beautiful art form. Traditional flamenco is a folk music form in that many of the songs are part of an oral tradition. The choreography is often created by well know flamenco dancers and it, too, is handed down to new dancers are they learn the art form. A flamenco dance is traditionally a solo in which the dancer expresses the music in his/her own personal style. Since it is danced to live music, usually guitar and singing, and adheres to a strict rhythmical structure, the musicians and dancers are able to improvise unique performance somewhat similar to the art of jazz. When brought to the concert stage several different flamenco styles can be presented. From the most serious and profound song of the Solea which is said to be the mother of all flamenco songs and expresses love, heartache and loneliness to the fast paced Bulerias, which is a song to indulge in the playful aspect of life, to have fun and enjoy friends and family. There are countless styles of flamenco dance and one of the most popular is Alegrias, a lively dance originating from the port city of Cadiz. This dance allows the dancers to show off their technical ability. Flamenco song and dance has an emotional depth that delights and exhilarates young and old. It speaks to the human condition in a way that is timeless and crosses all ethnic cultures and experiences.
