Why I Love Using my Mac
I often say to myself that it is ridiculous to be in love with my Mac, but after a visit with relatives who have the other platform where I was forced to try and work on my art projects on their computer, I have to admit that it's true. It may be that my inexperience with their computer caused my frustration, but I don't think so. Everything I usually do became very cumbersome and my host was so anxious about viruses and Internet espionage that I could hardly download anything of interest to me. Whenever I needed to see something as simple as a birthday card with animation, he had to unlock the various virus prevention programs so it could be seen. Both of us have the same Adobe software but I couldn't get his to work the way I'm used to having it work. I don't know why this was the case, but it was. I am not an expert in any of this. That is why I bought a Mac in the first place. It just seemed to me that it would be easier to learn how to use a computer if I could just buy one and plug it in without too much hassle. That is what happened with my first machine, a Performa. Since that early beginning when I taught myself how to do web design and how to create web pages for myself and my friends, I have had four computers and they all were Macs. My husband was an early computer user and his first computer, in 1980, was a brand of computer produced by the Osborne Computer Corporation. It was similar to a portable in that it was small and self contained with its own screen. I didn't know what happened to that company until I looked it up on The Computer History Museum Timeline of computer history. This site describes the Osborne as follows: "Adam Osborne completed the first portable computer, the Osborne I, which weighed 24 pounds and cost $1,795. The price made the machine especially attractive, as it included software worth about $1,500. The machine featured a 5-inch display, 64 kilobytes of memory, a modem, and two 5 1/4-inch floppy disk drives." When my husband moved on to a Compaq computer, I inherited the Osborne and used for simple word processing. I liked the idea of working on a computer so I then bought my first personal computer, the Macintosh Performa because of its graphic interface and because it had a CD-ROM. I didn't exactly know what that was, but it turned out to be a good thing. According to the Computer History Museum Timeline: "Apple Computer launched the Macintosh, the first successful mouse-driven computer with a graphic user interface, with a single $1.5 million commercial during the 1984 Super Bowl. Based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, the Macintosh included many of the Lisa´s features at a much more affordable price: $2,500." My husband used his computer but he really liked mine better and vowed that his next computer would be an Apple. When the IMac was announced and the date was set for August 14, 1998, he planned to be one of the first purchasers. Sadly, he was stricken with a stroke on that day and died shortly afterwards. Before he died he looked forward to getting well enough to buy his new computer. So here I am, all these years later, working at my Mac, teaching other old ladies how to use their Macs, and advising my friends on computer purchases while I think about how I can earn enough money on the internet so I can buy a new IMac myself.
